Electric car sales in New York rose 61 percent, year over year, in the first six months of 2017, according to the governor’s office.

The state said 4,209 electric vehicles were sold in the January-to-June period, compared to 2,609 for the first six months of last year.

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo credited the increase to the state’s Drive Clean Rebate initiative, which launched on March 21.

The program provides New York residents with a rebate of up to $2,000 for the purchase of a new electric car from participating dealers.

Electric vehicle sales jumped 74 percent in the April-to-June quarter compared to a year ago, the state added.

The initiative supports the state’s goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 40 percent by 2030 by encouraging the growth of clean electric car use in New York, Cuomo said in a statement.

Of the 2,332 Drive Clean Rebate applications submitted through Aug. 31, about 33 percent were submitted by Long Island consumers.

Nationally, 116,532 electric vehicles or plug-in hybrids were sold between January and August, which is 34 percent more than the same time period last year, according to stats compiled by

“The introduction of new models has led to a rise in sales for the electric vehicle market this year,” said Jessica Caldwell, a senior analyst at Santa Monica, California-based “The Tesla Model X picked up its production in 2017, and the all-new Chevrolet Bolt was introduced in December which bolstered both interest and sales.”

Caldwell added that the next big electric product, the Tesla Model 3, “isn’t expected to have substantial production numbers until later this year. That long-awaited vehicle will add a sizable gain in electric vehicle sales.”

More than 30 plug-in hybrid or battery-powered cars are eligible for the state rebate. For more information visit the state’s Drive Clean Rebate page.
