Bayport, a small South Shore waterfront community, is a good place to live if you want to know your neighbors.

That’s how Bryn Elliott describes the tiny hamlet.

The eclectic architecture gives buyers options when searching for homes, whether those built in the 1800s or new construction, says Elliott, a real estate agent at Douglas Elliman and membership chairman of the Bayport-Blue Point Chamber of Commerce.

But no matter what type of house one buys, “it’s a waterfront community and people who are about boating, fishing, beaches love it there,” he said.

Montauk Highway in Bayport is home to mom-and-pop businesses like Bayport Flower Houses, open since 1932 and Houdek’s Spirit Shoppe, in business since 1965.

“It’s tucked between Sayville and Patchogue, which both have main streets, so you have this quaint, quiet community without a lot of hustle-bustle,” Elliott said.

Bob Draffin wants to keep it that way. The Bayport Civic Association president and lifelong resident is championing the Town of Islip’s ongoing hamlet study in the hope it will keep out things like gas stations and fast-food restaurants.

Residents have said they’d like to add streetscaping, planned architectural design and traffic-calming measures “to make our little piece of downtown Bayport a little more cohesive,” he said.

The hamlet has a few unique spots, like the Bayport Aerodrome, one of the last remaining grass runways in use on Long Island that was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2008.

Some new development is happening. Bayport Meadow Estates on Church Street, a 55-and-over condo complex, has sold many units but still has portions under construction.

Outlaw Acres offers horses for sale and riding lessons but is slated to close to make way for another planned residential development for people 55 and older.

Islip Councilwoman Mary Kate Mullen lives in Bayport with her spouse and children and says the small-town feeling attracts people to the waterfront hamlet with good schools, including Bayport-Blue Point High School, which won the prestigious National Blue-Ribbon School Designation in 2017.

“While I could list many reasons that make Bayport special," Mullen said, "in my opinion, it is the people who live there that make it such a great place.”
