Former Water Mill home of late artist Larry Rivers lists for $1.6M

A Water Mill home that belongs to the family of artist Larry Rivers, and where he created and displayed some of his artwork, recently came on the market. The three-bedroom farmhouse, which sits on more than 6 acres, is listed for $1.6 million.

Rivers, who died in 2002, was known as a pioneer of pop art. His wife, Clarice Rivers, purchased the property more than 20 years ago and moved the house up a hill, adding a basement, says Gwynne Rivers, the oldest of the couple’s two daughters.

The two eventually separated, but never divorced, and they remained friends. One of Rivers’ paintings, part of a series depicting famous artists, including Matisse and Picasso, is currently on display in the home. Rivers was also known for a 16-foot-tall sculpture of a pair of female legs, a copy of which was on display outside a home in Sag Harbor, much to the consternation of some village residents.

Before Rivers became sick with cancer, he did a charcoal drawing of his family sitting on the porch of the house.

“The very last work he did included the house,” Gwynne Rivers says.

The property includes more than 2 buildable acres and a heated saltwater gunite pool.
