The holiday season is a time for gathering around the hearth with family and friends. Here’s a look at five homes for sale with a focus on their fireplaces.

Shirley

14 Francine Place

$449,000

The owners of this 2005 Victorian added a gas fireplace to the home when they bought it — and built a striking sunroom to surround it. Agent James Sigerson of Century 21 Cor Ace Realty says the sunroom is the heart of the home, where the family gathers around the stone hearth to recreate and relax. They are so fond of the room, Sigerson says, that it’s where they choose to put up their Christmas tree and many of their holiday decorations. The three-bedroom home offers 3 1⁄2 baths, an eat-in kitchen, a living room and a formal dining room. There are hardwood floors throughout the home and a full basement with 8-foot ceilings and an outside entrance. The 100-by-218-foot property features a gazebo-enclosed hot tub, a rear deck and a two-car garage. Taxes are $11,191. James Sigerson, Century 21 Cor Ace Realty, 631-514-1787

Riverhead

63 Tyler Dr.

$557,000

The three-sided gas fireplace in this Postmodern ranch is part of both the formal dining room and great room and can be set ablaze at the touch of a button, says agent Sheryl Schwartz of Douglas Elliman Real Estate. Schwartz says the ease of lighting the fireplace makes the owners use it often, whether it’s enhancing the ambience of a dinner party, warming them up on a winter night or creating an appealing atmosphere for relaxing with a glass of wine. The great room features 18-foot ceilings and panoramic windows, which Schwartz says provide breathtaking views of the Vineyards Golf Course. The kitchen features marble countertops, stainless steel appliances and a center island. The 2006 home has three bedrooms — including a master suite with 14-foot ceilings — and two limestone and marble baths. There’s a charming front porch, Schwartz says, and a rear deck and stone patio overlooking the 12th hole of the golf course. The 780-by-100-foot property has a two-car garage and comes with beach rights. Taxes are $10,067. Peter and Sheryl Schwartz, Douglas Elliman Real Estate, 917-647-3632

Great River

139 McCarthy Lane

$699,990

The wood-burning fireplace in the kitchen of this Colonial helps to warm the entire first floor, says agent Matthew Hart of World Properties International Sea to Sky Realty. Hart says prospective buyers are drawn to the cozy environment the stone fireplace creates in the eat-in kitchen, which features custom cabinets, granite counters, a Wolf range, double ovens and a Sub-Zero refrigerator. The home, which was built in 1980, also offers a formal dining room, a den, an office and a living room with coffered ceilings and an additional fireplace. There are four bedrooms and 2 1⁄2 baths — including a marble bathroom in the master suite that has an air tub and steam shower. There’s an in-ground pool with a water slide, a deck and a turf field on the .52-acre property, which has an attached garage and in-ground sprinklers. Taxes are $17,832. Woodmere

930 Browers Point Branch

$775,000

There are four fireplaces to warm you at this Colonial. Judith Seide of Douglas Elliman Real Estate says “there’s always a fire going” when the owners entertain in the stately living room, which features original exposed beams, wood molding and trim. Seide says you can find that “exquisite woodwork” throughout the 1912 home, which also features a blue and white delft tiled fireplace in the formal dining room. There’s a brick fireplace in the den, which is brightened by skylights and sliding glass doors leading to the backyard. The home offers five bedrooms, including what Seide calls “a romantic master suite” with a fireplace, and 3 1⁄2 baths. There’s a renovated eat-in kitchen with granite counters and a built-in grill with a copper hood. The home also offers hardwood floors, an office and a finished basement. The 7,500-square-foot property has a detached garage and is equipped with in-ground sprinklers. Taxes are $22,254.

Glen Cove

40 Highfield Rd.

$1,178,000

The owners of this Tuscan-inspired Colonial created a den with a hearth that’s “not just a working fireplace, it’s a playing fireplace,” says Sandi Lefkowitz of Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty. Lefkowitz says the owners love to entertain in the den, especially this time of year, inviting guests to roast chestnuts and marshmallows in the wood-burning fireplace, which maintains the original red reclaimed brickwork above the mantel but has been resurfaced with intricately designed travertine marble. The 5-square-foot mantel is framed with an ornate, wrought-iron, double-door screen and can be seen from the family room, which opens to the den. The 1976 home offers five bedrooms and 4 1⁄2 baths, including a master suite with a walk-in closest. There’s an open floor plan with an eat-in kitchen, formal dining room and living room and a playroom and entertaining space in the finished basement. The 151-by-200-foot property comes with beach rights and features a heated, in-ground pool, built-in barbecue, brick patio and gazebo. Taxes are $15,901.
