Rich Cribs: Historic mansion once part of Four Winds estate

A 21-room brick mansion in Oyster Bay Cove, once part of the Four Winds estate, is on the market for $3.6 million (click here for more photos). It was built in 1928 and designed by the architectural firm of Delano & Aldrich for Gerard Beekman Hoppin, a stockbroker, and his wife, Rosina Sherman Hoyt, a grandniece of  William T. Sherman, a Civil War general.

The home’s curved foyer leads to a spiral staircase. Above is an oval skylight surrounded by a mural of sky and clouds. The doors to the rooms on the upper floors are slightly curved as well, says Leonidas Papalas, listing agent with Century 21 Papalas Realty.

Original cherrywood paneling and built-ins shelves are featured in the library. The ballroom has a floor-to-ceiling marble fireplace -- one of eight fireplaces in the manse -- and French doors opening out to a balcony terrace. There are 10 bedrooms, five bathrooms and three half bathrooms.

Other features include a sunroom, eat-in kitchen, banquet dining room, family room, patio and heated two-car garage. The property is 4½ acres.
