What’s new: A new novel by Attica Locke, Stephen Greenblatt’s book on Adam and Eve, Eileen Myles’ dog memoir

BLUEBIRD, BLUEBIRD, by Attica Locke. Houston native Locke — author of “Pleasantville” and “Black Water Rising,” and a writer and producer on TV’s “Empire” — centers her new book on Darren Matthew, a black Texas Ranger drawn back to his small hometown in East Texas to investigate a double murder that may or may not be racially motivated. THE RISE AND FALL OF ADAM AND EVE, by Stephen Greenblatt. The biblical story of Adam and Eve is a “tale that might captivate the imagination of an impressionable child,” writes the author, a Harvard professor and Pulitzer Prize winner, but he doesn’t find it a sophisticated explanation of “human origins and human destiny.” In his new book, Greenblatt examines the long life of this story, which, he acknowledges, works “so brilliantly and so effortlessly.” (W.W. AFTERGLOW (A DOG MEMOIR), by Eileen Myles. This offbeat “memoir” opens with a handwritten letter found in the hallway of Myles' apartment building: It’s from a lawyer for Myles' dog Rosie and asks that the author take “legal responsibility for the damages you have inflicted over a period of nine years.” Other parts of this whimsical but philosophical book are narrated by Rosie. Myles, a poet in New York and Marfa, Texas, is the inspiration for the Cherry Jones character on Amazon’s “Transparent.” (Grove Press, $24)
