Christie Brinkley has taken to social media to offer her condolences to the family of David Bowie and reveal her role in helping him start a family with wife supermodel Iman.

“Iman always told the story in such a charming way,” Brinkley wrote on Instagram, while posting a photo of Bowie, Iman and their daughter, Alexandria Zahra, as a baby. She said Iman would tell people, “It took two blondes to get me pregnant: David Bowie and Christie Brinkley!”

Brinkley said she was happy to help the couple when Iman asked.

“Iman explained to me, ‘In Somalia they say if you are having trouble getting pregnant you must hold a baby all day,’” Brinkley wrote. “So I handed her my baby, Sailor, and she held her all day long ...and sure enough, it worked! After 7 years trying without luck... Iman got pregnant!”

Bowie died on Sunday after an 18-month battle with cancer. His family has not commented beyond Bowie’s son, director Duncan Jones confirming his death on Twitter.

Fans around the world, however, have been expressing their remorse, leaving flowers and remembrances at the family’s SoHo home. They have also been seeking out Bowie’s work. Vevo reports that Bowie broke Adele’s record of most views of an artist’s work in one day, as 51 million watched his videos on Monday when his death was announced. Billboard expects Bowie’s album “Blackstar” (ISO/Columbia), which was released on Jan. 8, his 69th birthday, will become his first album to reach No. 1 in America.

Brinkley, like millions of others, offered her sympathy to Bowie’s family.

“So beyond her great beauty and business savvy, and beyond Bowie’s music and art, I always felt a sweet connection to this stunningly gorgeous and creative couple,” she wrote. “Today my heart aches For Iman, and Alexandria for their untimely and unbearable loss.”
