British police say singer George Michael has been charged with drug and driving offenses after his car crashed into a building in an upscale residential area.

London's Metropolitan Police department said Michael, 47, was charged Thursday with possession of cannabis and with driving while unfit through drink or drugs, The Associated Press reports.

In a statement, police say Michael will appear at London's Highbury Corner Magistrates Court on Aug. 24.

Michael was arrested last month after his car crashed into a building in the Hampstead district of north London.

Last year, Michael was questioned by police after his car hit a tractor-trailer, but was released.

He was banned from driving for two years in 2007 after pleading guilty to driving while on drugs.
