Hines of 'DWTS' held in police mix-up
"Dancing With the Stars" contestant and Pittsburgh Steelers star Hines Ward was ordered out of a car at gunpoint by Los Angeles police early Thursday and was handcuffed, along with the female driver. But it was all a misunderstanding.
About 20 police cars, Ward told Pittsburgh's WTAE-TV, surrounded the car after it had been pulled over at 1:30 a.m. on Ventura Boulevard in Studio City, over suspicion of being stolen. Ward, the MVP of Super Bowl XL in 2006, and the unidentified driver, who was not his "DWTS" partner Kym Johnson, were, per procedure, removed from the car at gunpoint and handcuffed, LAPD Sgt. Maria Morrison told the TV station.
It turned out the woman had reported the car stolen on April 19 after some confusion over where it had been parked, and then never called police to say she'd recovered it.
Ward told ESPN's Chris Mortensen in a text message, "There's not a story. It was a misunderstanding and the police apologized to me. I didn't get arrested. I don't have a reaction to a non-story."
