Oscars 2015: Winning looks on the red carpet

Black umbrellas may well have been the accessory du jour on the rainy red carpet at the 87th Academy Awards, but the stars went the other way in whites and light colors, often so textural you could almost feel them.

Julianne Moore said Karl Lagerfeld himself designed her Chanel gown of icy crystal with dark, chunky details, while Kerry Washington loved the ease of her "sleek" Miu Miu number that boasted a stiff peplum top. Nicole Kidman thoughtfully brought a rainbow to the wet red carpet, hers a ridged, iridescent column with a red waistband. Lady Gaga donned red gloves with her custom white and silver Azzedine Alaia that somehow resembled a crackled mirror.

Jennifer Aniston's pale Versace, embellished to the hilt, almost looked like fish scales. And Lupita Nyong'o chose white Calvin Klein with 6,000 pearls.

Felicity Jones' pale, blue-gray Alexander McQueen also had pearls and petals at the top. And, speaking of pearls -- and stones and sequins -- Jennifer Lopez said her blush Elie Saab princess number wasn't suitable for partying; she was definitely changing later. Also in Elie Saab, Emma Stone wore a pale chartreuse number with a swooping back and heavy lace and sequin seams.

Best-bod award of the night -- and there were plenty of great ones -- goes to Rosamund Pike, who had a baby in December, in knockout floral lace red Givenchy. Also in red, Dakota Johnson, in scarlet Yves Saint Laurent.

In the navy, Jessica Chastain in midnight Givenchy with a sparkly bodice and Sienna Miller in Oscar de la Renta. In the palest shade of blue, Reese Witherspoon went strapless in architectural Tom Ford.

As per usual, there was a "black" list. Margot Robbie killed it in a plunging Saint Laurent, and, oh, that Van Cleef & Arpels necklace. The amazing Meryl Streep stunned in a swanky Lanvin ensemble -- a black tuxedo jacket and velvet skirt with an Art Deco crystal buckle.

Polarizing moment of the night? Gwyneth Paltrow's slim, pink Ralph & Russo one-shoulder gown with a sci-fi corsage at the shoulder. Her figure was Gwyneth perfect (She tweeted "wheremyspanxat?"). As for the look, well, we leave it to you to decide.
