Phillips' surgery reportedly more serious

"American Idol" winner Phillip Phillips underwent more serious surgery than previously known, TMZ.com reports.

Phillips, 21 -- who was released from a hospital Sunday after a nearly seven-hour operation four days earlier to remove kidney stones -- had a stent implanted during his "Idol" run, during which he underwent eight procedures for the extremely painful, debilitating condition. The stent remained in his kidney for so long, TMZ said, that it became embedded in his body and had to be cut out with a laser.

The stent, a temporary solution, had been implanted after stones had rendered Phillips' right kidney largely ineffective, The Hollywood Reporter explained Tuesday.

A representative for the singer-songwriter told the trade magazine that Phillips is expected to recover in time to participate in the 45-day "American Idol Live!" tour that commences July 6 in Detroit. It is scheduled to be at Nassau Coliseum on Aug. 22.

Meanwhile, Phillips' family pawn shop in Georgia was burglarized after someone used a backhoe to smash open the back door, according to TMZ. The site said more than $4,000 worth of merchandise was taken. The family was not in Georgia at the time.
