Gnarly Karma singer-guitarist Mike Renert says he was moving out of his childhood home in Cold Spring Harbor recently when he came across his mom’s collection of 45s.

The first one he pulled out was The Doors’ “Light My Fire,” and a few days later Renert learned that he and his band had just landed their biggest show yet, opening for The Doors’ Robby Krieger at the Wellmont Theater in Montclair, New Jersey, on April 27.

“It’s kind of mind-blowing,” he says. “Everything is falling into place.”

The Huntington-based band has been gaining lots of attention since the release of its debut album, “Classic Breeze” (Gnarly Karma), last fall, leading to a pretty packed summer festival season.

“It just means so much because I really do write about my life,” says Renert, who says teaming up with drummer Jarrod Beyer pulled the songs together. Adding bassist Ryan McAdam and saxophonist-keyboardist Billy Hanley gave the band the sound Renert had always wanted, “folk-rock with a heavier edge.”

Renert admits he’s already getting anxious about the upcoming shows. “But once you hit the stage, the energy is through the roof,” he says. “I let everything go.”

Gnarly Karma plays The All Music Lounge at The Space at Westbury at 8 p.m. April 28. Tickets are $10.
