‘Ghostbusters’ trailer answers burning questions about the female-led reboot

The first trailer for “Ghostbusters” is now online, answering a few questions about the all-female reboot starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon.

For starters, the supernatural green slime from the 1984 original makes a comeback, and in the trailer it’s Wiig (as Columbia University professor Erin Gilbert) who gets it first, though McCarthy (as paranormal authority Abby Yates) takes a hit soon after. McKinnon’s character, nuclear engineer Jillian Holtzmann, appears to be a roguish but wacky type — maybe somewhere between Doc Brown and Buckaroo Banzai? — while Leslie Jones’ Patty Tolan, a subway worker, offers the trio her help as a guide to the streets and tunnels of New York City.

The beloved “Ghostbusters” vehicle, the Ecto-1, gets a new origin story (though it ends up looking much as it did in the original film), and McCarthy gets a chance to do some possessed-by-a-demon slapstick.

The trailer also offers a new hint as to what kind of character Chris Hemsworth will be playing. Early stills showed him looking like a receptionist-secretary in bookish glasses, but the trailer shows him kicking open a door in a form-fitting white T-shirt. The context of that brief shot isn’t clear — is he joining the team in the fight, or has he, too, been possessed?

“Ghostbusters,” written by Katie Dippold with director Paul Feig, arrives in theaters July 15.
