WHO Jessica Chastain

THE DEAL After starring in the feel-good drama "The Help," the espionage thriller "The Debt" and Terrence Malick's experimental "The Tree of Life," the 30-year-old actress has signed up to play the female lead opposite Tom Cruise in a still-untitled sci-fi film, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Previously known as "Oblivion," the movie takes place in an apocalyptic future where humans live in the clouds above an uninhabitable Earth, and stars Cruise as a man who moves between the two worlds; Chastain plays his lover. Joseph Kosinski ("Tron: Legacy") will direct.

WHO Gary Oldman

THE MOVIE "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy"

THE DEAL This well-reviewed British thriller -- based on John le Carré's enduring 1974 novel and starring Oldman as disenchanted spy George Smiley -- has racked up an impressive 7.14 million pounds ($11.2 million) since its Sept. 16 release in the United Kingdom, Variety reports. That's good news for the film's American distributor, Focus Features, and perhaps for Oldman, whose performance is already fueling some Oscar talk. The film's U.S. release date is Dec. 9.

THE MOVIE "Shut Up, Little Man!"

THE DEAL Subtitled "An Audio Misadventure," this documentary traces the unlikely cultural influence of raging homophobe Raymond Huffman and flamboyant gay man Peter Haskett, alcoholics who roomed together in San Francisco's gritty Lower Haight during the late 1980s. Tapes of their high-decibel, creatively profane arguments -- surreptitiously recorded by neighbors -- became a viral sensation in the pre-Internet era and eventually found their way into the music of Nirvana, the comics of Daniel Clowes ("Ghost World"), even an episode of "SpongeBob SquarePants." One of the recording-makers, Mitchell D., will speak via Skype after a screening of the film next week.
