Movie buzz: Ed Burns makes three LI stops

THE MOVIE "The Fitzgerald Family Christmas"
THE DEAL Let no one say that the Valley Stream filmmaker has forgotten his roots. Burns' latest film, which opens Friday, was filmed in Lynbrook and Rockville Centre (among other local spots) and focuses on an Irish-American clan gathering for yuletide on Long Island. Long Beach native Ed Lauter plays the patriarch; the cast includes Connie Britton, Kerry Bishé and Noah Emmerich. What's more, Burns himself will be blanketing Long Island this weekend with Q&A sessions at three screenings.
INFO Burns is scheduled to appear Saturday at 7 p.m. at Cinema Arts Centre, 423 Park Ave., Huntington; Sunday at 2 p.m. at Malverne Cinema, 350 Hempstead Ave.; and Sunday at 3:50 p.m. at the Squire Cinemas, 115 Middle Neck Rd., Great Neck.
THE MOVIE "Side by Side"
THE DEAL Just a few days before the Dec. 14 release of "The Hobbit" -- the first feature film shot using 48-frame-per-second digital technology -- comes a local screening of the documentary "Side by Side: The Science, Art and Impact of Digital Cinema." It features interviews with Steven Soderbergh, James Cameron, Martin Scorsese, Christopher Nolan and many other directors. Chris Kenneally, the filmmaker, and his cinematographer, Levittown native Chris Cassidy, will appear in person.

THE MOVIE "Killing Them Softly"
THE DEAL The 48-year-old actor appears to be taking his lumps these days. Pitt's television commercial for Chanel No. 5 -- he's the fragrance's first-ever male spokesman -- was widely ridiculed for its ponderous dialogue ("Wherever I go, there you are") and even became a "Saturday Night Live" skit starring Taran Killam ("I'm starting to sound insane"). Now, Pitt's latest film, the crime-drama "Killing Them Softly," has received a rare F grade from CinemaScore, the market research firm that surveys audiences. The movie opened Friday with a disappointing $7 million at 2,424 theaters nationwide, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
