Movie buzz: Tom Cruise's foreign intrigue

THE DEAL A foreign trailer for this Paramount Pictures film hit the Web earlier this week, offering a brief (and poorly dubbed) glimpse of Cruise as the popular action hero created by novelist Lee Child. The apparently Russian trailer promises old-fashioned thrills, with Reacher -- a former Army operative turned drifter -- racing a vintage-looking muscle car and dispensing rough justice to various thugs. The cast includes Rosamund Pike, Richard Jenkins, David Oyelowo and, believe it or not, German documentarian Werner Herzog as Reacher's nemesis, The Zec. The film is tentatively scheduled for release in December. Late Tuesday afternoon, Paramount made the official trailer available online in English.
THE MOVIE "Searching for Sugarman"
THE DEAL One of rock history's many would-be Dylans, the folk singer called Rodriguez recorded just two albums -- 1970's "Cold Fact" and 1971's "Coming From Reality" -- before fading into oblivion and giving up on music. Decades later, however, he found unlikely cult status in far-flung countries like Australia and South Africa, and samples of his songs popped up in tracks by Nas and DJ David Holmes, leading to a new touring career. Malik Bendjelloul's documentary about the long-forgotten musician will kick off the Hamptons International Film Festival's annual SummerDoc series; Alec Baldwin will interview the director.

THE MOVIE "Sing Your Song"
THE DEAL Susanne Rostock's biographical documentary on Harry Belafonte, which appeared on HBO in October, concentrates less on his singing career than on his civil-rights activism, including his behind-the-scenes efforts to recruit high-profile and seemingly unlikely stars such as Charlton Heston. The film screens locally next week with an in-person appearance by Rostock and Belafonte's daughter, Gina, who co-produced.
