After last week's surprise eliminations, Monday's cuts were far easier to explain. Tuesday night's cuts? That will be a different matter.

Like last week, the top vote-getter automatically moves on and the mentor will pick one of the remaining two to advance as well.

TEAM CEE LO

The need to keep all the mentor's teams equal is one of the most maddening parts of “The Voice,” especially this week when all three of Cee Lo Green's remaining team members are better than Adam's best contestant.

Jamar Rogers had an amazing moment with “It's My Life,” turning Bon Jovi's classic rock song into his own personal tale. His talent, combined with his upbeat personality and wrenching back story, makes him compelling, even though his approach isn't exactly in line with what's popular today.

However, neither is Juliet Simms' rocker-girl approach, but that sure works too, especially when she takes a page from her coach and performs Aerosmith's “Cryin'” in a pair of black wings.

And Cee Lo offered Cheesa a grand compliment after her magnificent version of Whitney Houston's “I Have Nothing,” saying, “I think it's time to be advocating for power female vocalists, not this AutoTuned Tinkerbell thing! I'm talking about that from-the-gut, childbearing, woman thang!”

Unfortunately, James Massone couldn't keep up his momentum, making parts of his take on Billy Joel's “Just the Way You Are” painful to listen to. Even though he certainly would have pulled in a lot of votes based on his boy-band good looks, Cee Lo did the right thing and cut him from the team.

The question remains, though, will he save Cheesa, the best actual singer on the team, if America doesn't?

THE RANKINGS

Jamar Rogers, “It's My Life”
Cheesa, “I Have Nothing”
Juliet Simms, “Cryin'”
James Massone, “Just the Way You Are”

ELIMINATED: James
SHOULD HAVE BEEN ELIMINATED: James
AMERICA'S SAVE: Juliet (*actually Jamar)
CEE LO'S SAVE: Jamar (*actually Juliet)

TEAM ADAM

Adam Levine talked about being confused by his team because so many of them surprised him, for better or worse.

Mostly worse, to be honest.

Pip fell apart at the end of Keane's “Somewhere Only We Know,” using an ill-advised falsetto to make his already messy vocals sound so much worse. He was an easy pick to eliminate.

However, one-time contender Mathai wasn't much better, turning Nelly Furtado's “I'm Like a Bird” into something leaden and repetitive. Mathai's struggle would suggest that Adam isn't that good of a coach, since her unique voice holds a lot of potential that was never really unleashed.

Of course, the way Katrina Parker has blossomed into a full-fledged artist would suggest that maybe Adam does know what he's doing. Katrina was stunning on Christina Perri's “Jar of Hearts,” showing off both her vocal and emotional range.

The big winner of the night will likely be Tony Lucca, the former Mouseketeer who Christina Aguilera criticized previously as one-dimensional because, well, he's kind of been one-dimensional. He has a good voice and seems like a nice guy, but he doesn't really have another gear. It was a gimmick for him to do former fellow Mouseketeer Britney Spears' “Baby One More Time” in front of former fellow Mouseketeer Aguilera.

Good gimmick! But that doesn't really help with showing that he's an artist people are going to believe in. That might be a coach misstep too. Sorry, Adam.
