Barry Manilow is ready to take a chance again with Elmont's UBS Arena. The Grammy-winning performer has rescheduled nine of his recently postponed concerts, including "Manilow: The Last Long Island Concert," which is now set for June 27 at the venue, according to BarryManilow.com.
Earlier this month, Manilow, 82, was forced to postpone his April concerts on the orders of his doctor. It was the third time in the past few months that he has had to pause shows following his diagnosis with lung cancer in December. Almost immediately after being diagnosed, Manilow underwent surgery to remove a cancerous spot in his left lung.
Manilow's tour will resume on June 25 with a concert in Reading, Pennsylvania, and shows are scheduled through Jan. 21 according to the website.
More good news for Fanilows, the name given to his fans: On June 5, Manilow will also put out "What a Time," his first studio album in 15 years. "What a Time" will feature 13 tracks, including collaborations with Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, Dave Cobb, and longtime co-writers Bruce Sussman and Adrienne Anderson. According to the announcement, the songs will cover various musical styles, "from classic, string-swept torch songs to groove-driven R&B flourishes, heartland rock touches, and gospel-inspired crescendos."
Manilow had his greatest success as a hitmaker in the 1970s and '80s when his brand of mellow melodies and heartfelt lyrics were a staple on Top 40 and adult-contemporary radio. His songs, like "Could It Be Magic," "Mandy," "I Write the Songs" and the Latin-infused "Copacabana (At the Copa)" were all Top 10 hits on Billboard's Hot 100 chart.
"Copacabana," which told the story of a showgirl named Lola, who was torn between Copa bartender Tony and a gangster named Rico, was made into a 1985 TV movie starring Manilow, making in a rare foray into acting as Tony.
Pop star Sabrina Carpenter paid tribute to Manilow when she appeared at Coachella earlier this month by doing a mashup of her song "Feather" with Manilow's "Copacabana." According to fan posts, Manilow sent her flowers with a note saying "Dear Sabrina. Loved your set at Coachella. Much good luck."
