Broadway is about to put out the Wilkommen mat for "Cabaret."
The recent London production "Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club" is set to open at the August Wilson Theatre sometime next spring, producers announced on Tuesday. No other details have been revealed including whether the West End version's stars Eddie Redmayne and Jessie Buckley will reprise their critically acclaimed roles as the Master of Ceremonies and Sally Bowles.
"Cabaret" has been a Broadway staple ever since it premiered in 1966. That edition ran for 1,165 performances and racked up eight Tony Awards, including wins for best musical and featured actor Joel Grey as the Master of Ceremonies. Grey repeated the role in the 1972 film version, for which he won an Oscar, and in the Broadway revival that ran from October 1987 to June 1988.
In March 1998, "Cabaret" returned in a highly successful production that ran for 2,377 performances and earned four Tonys, including best musical revival, best actor (Alan Cumming as Master of Ceremonies) and best actress (Natasha Richardson as Sally Bowles). Cumming reprised his role when the show returned to Broadway in 2014. That production ran for 388 performances and co-starred Michelle Williams as Sally Bowles.
