Cher announces Broadway musical based on her life, songs is coming in 2018

Singer and Oscar-winning actress Cher will be the subject of a Broadway musical based on her life and songs.
The Grammy Award-winner, 71, who had responded rapturously to a staged reading of “The Cher Show” in January, tweeted Wednesday, “Just got off phone w/Writer & Director of musical. There Will [be] performance in THEATRE WITH ACTORS, DANCERS, SINGERS‼ IT’ll [be] ON BROADWAY 2018.”
Three-time Tony Award-nominee Rick Elice (“Jersey Boys,” “Peter and the Starcatcher”) wrote the musical’s book, and Jason Moore, a Tony nominee for “Avenue Q,” is the director.
“The Cher Show” had held a staged reading for two weeks starting Jan. 2. Its casting notice described “Cher at different moments of her life — starting as a teenager who falls for Sonny Bono . . . [then as] a successful music star navigating the challenges of the entertainment industry . . . and [then as] the lady we know today with a fascinating wealth of life experience, successes, and failures.” Characters listed included Cher’s husbands, Sonny Bono and Gregg Allman, music mogul David Geffen and fashion designer Bob Mackie, as well as Cher’s parents.
“Just walked Out of the musical,” Cher tweeted on Jan. 17 after a reading. “I SOBBED & LAUGHED, & I WAS PREPARED NOT 2LIKE IT. AUDIENCE CLAPPED AFTER SONGS, & GAVE IT STANDING OVATION.”
Cher, a two-time Academy Award nominee who won for Best Actress for 1987’s “Moonstruck,” has herself performed on Broadway once, in “Come Back to the 5 & Dime Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean” in 1982.
