Prince's 'Purple Rain' coming to Broadway

"Purple Rain" is in the forecast for Broadway next spring.

On Monday, it was announced that "Purple Rain," a new musical inspired by the landmark album by Prince and the movie in which he starred, will begin previews at the Majestic Theatre on March 12 and open on April 12.

The stage show will be set in Minneapolis in 1984, the same year that both the movie and the album were released. Like the film, the semiautobiographical plot will follow the story of "The Kid," a young musician from a dysfunctional family, whose road to stardom is hindered by dissension among his bandmates, a rival singer and a complicated romance.

The show will feature music by Prince, including the hits "When Doves Cry," "I Would Die 4U" and the title song. The legendary performer was 57 when he died in 2016.

"Purple Rain" had its premiere in November at the State Theatre in Prince's hometown of Minneapolis. Though reviews were mixed, it did enjoy an extended run.

Saheem Ali, director of the Tony-winning "Buena Vista Social Club," will helm the production. The cast will be announced at a later date. Tickets will go on sale in September at telecharge.com. For more information, go to purplerainbroadway.com.
