All credit due to "Dancing With the Stars," which actually convinced a few corners of the gullible press (umm, me; see below) that William Levy might be questionable to perform last night. Not only did the dear boy perform but very nearly scored a perfect 30. (I suppose a perfect score would have been a bit much, right?)

This now more or less represents the third time this season the show  has cried wolf -- first, with leaks to Us and People that Jaleel White had gone bonkers; second, that Melissa Gilbert was effectively broken in several different places; third, that Levy had hurt his ankle so badly that ... well who knows!

Then, they keep on dancing, and dancing well.

In point of fact, White may well have gone bonkers, poor Gilbert may be a wreck and Levy last night may have Argentine tangoed his way through great pain. It's also just as easy to doubt all this.

Here's what I suspect is going on -- particularly with Levy. This season's cast turned out to be surprisingly competent, but the show also realized -- probably unhappily -- that Donald Driver was so much better than anyone else that the season was effectively over by the thrid week. (Katherine Jenkins may be just about flawless, but "DWTS" knows full well most votes will go to Levy and Driver.)  So time to even the playing field, or dance floor; create drama; get the Gullible Press to bite on every off-set rumor -- turn a stubbed toe into a blown-out ankle, a sniffle into pneumonia, a few cross words with a partner into a complete melt-down.

Levy has a bad week on the dance floor last week? Have him tweet that he had an injury -- be vague about the severity -- then have him come out and knock it over the fence. Drama!

He had a good one last night -- but better than Driver? Of course not.  You be the judge. (See below.)

Meanwhile, I wonder who's going to break a leg -- literally -- this week? I'm sure I'll read about it in Us.
