'The (sluggish) River' starts slow

ABC's attempt to capitalize on the found-footage-cinema-verite-handheld-camera-horror genre got off to a mixed start last night with "The River."
First hour was seen by 8.2 million viewers, and the second by 6.82, while the demo rating hovered over a 2. By no means terrible, but not a success either, and that second hour figure is most troubling from ABC's perspective given weaker competition at that time.
The network would've liked to see a jump there, but didn't get it. Reviews were pretty strong, even though I was convinced this was actually a comedy; nothing wrong with that, by the way.
The show's fun. But we'll all just have to wait until next week to see if there's life in old man "River."
