TV on DVD: 'The Indian Doctor,' 'Borgia'
THE INDIAN DOCTOR
Series "Downton Abbey" withdrawal? Get your historic soap fix from this slyly down-to-earth British portrait of a 1960s Welsh mining village that imports its new doctor from India (lovable Sanjeev Bhaskar, stretching from his BBC America comedy "The Kumars at No. 42"). Their culture clash finds the immigrant and his pampered wife more upper-class than the homefolk, and the newcomers quickly uncover industrial intrigue, sexual secrets and wounded souls -- both themselves and their Welsh neighbors (including teens and tweens portrayed as sensitively as their elders). It's warm, witty, continually surprising and profoundly human. You won't want it to end. (Indeed, a second series of five episodes premieres in the U.K. this week.)

BORGIA: FAITH AND FEAR Another new-to-U.S. series, this graphic tale comes from American producer Tom Fontana ("Oz," "Homicide") via Europe's Canal+. As with Showtime's "The Borgias" (back April 8 with season 2), the focus is the crime family of the infamous pope (played by John Doman, The Wire"), emphasizing their political wranglings, with bonus making-of featurette; $40 for three discs, Lionsgate.
