Almost all of us have nicknames. Some of them we like -- others not as much. We wanted to know if kids would rather be known by their proper names or nicknames. We surveyed 339 kids in the fourth grade. Here are our results:

Proper name: 113

Nickname: 226

As you can see, twice as many kids preferred their nicknames to their proper names. Some of the reasons they gave were that the name is easier to say or describes them. Other kids said the nickname makes them feel special. A few kids said their nickname is funny. Kids who would rather be called by their given name said they think their nicknames are annoying or they just do not like them. One kid said his nickname was embarrassing. He wouldn't tell us what others call him.
