Read a Recipe for Literacy is a program for kids in grades three through six at Floyd Memorial Library in Greenport.

This program was founded by the Weinig Foundation. The goal is to teach children about respect, communication, the community and, to help the environment, and to create a hands-on learning environment. There are sessions in the fall and in the spring on Wednesdays. We work on a theme such as community or friendship. We wear chef hats and talk to each other about things connected with that topic.

Sometimes the teacher invites a guest speaker to talk about the community. There is also a community garden that the kids get to work on with the teacher to grow fruits and veggies. This program takes place in New York and Florida, and is expanding to other international locations starting with Italy. Even though I will be a seventh grader next year, I am coming back as a mentor.
