Things to do with your kids on Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is approaching, and chances are you're scrambling to find something to do with your kids. If you're looking to get out of the house and have a little fun, here are a few things to do around Long Island, including family-friendly performances, crafts, indoor play, free events and more.

Songs of Freedom at the Long Island Children's Museum (11 Davis Ave., Garden City). Families can attend a tribute concert of American folk music using poetry, historic slave narratives, a cappella harmonies and photographs to highlight slavery and the Civil Rights Movment in American history. Robbi K & Friends perform "We Shall Overcome," "If I Had a Hammer," and more on Monday, Jan. 21 at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.  Price: $9 with museum admission ($14), $12 theater only; licm.org.

The Magic of Alexo at Bayway Arts Center (265 Main St., East Islip). A magic show with illusions and comedy for children of all ages on Monday, Jan. 21 1 p.m. Price: $11, $13 at the door; magicofalexo.com.

Long Island Nets Martin Luther King Jr. Legacy Game at NYCB Live's Nassau Coliseum (1255 Hempstead Tpke., Uniondale). On Monday at 3 p.m., the Long Island Nets will host this second annual event when the team plays Raptors 905. During the game, there will be several elements to pay homage to Martin Luther King Jr., including a courtside art exhibit from the African American Museum of Nassau County. "Mary Poppins" at The Showplace at Bellmore Movies (222 Pettit Ave., Bellmore). This live production by Plaza Theatricals follows the classic children's story of a magical nanny who embarks on exciting adventures with the children she cares for. The performance takes place Saturday, Jan. 19 at 11 a.m., Sunday, Jan. 20 at noon and Monday, Jan. 21 at 11 a.m. Stick around after the show to meet the cast. Price: $12; plazatheatrical.com.

Paint Party at Long Island Explorium (101 E. Broadway, Port Jefferson). From 1-5 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 19-Monday, Jan. 21, create non-toxic glossy paint using everyday materials and have fun testing it out. Don't forget name your colors. Paw Patrol Baking event at Bake Me A Cake Boutique (184 E. Montauk Hwy., Lindenhurst). Decorate a 7-inch cake with your little ones. Kids can ice it, roll the fondant and use cookie cutters to create Paw Patrol designs on Monday, Jan. 21 at 11 a.m. There will also be a dance party with a special character guest. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Paint Event at Key to My Art (10 West Oak St., Amityville and 131 Main St., East Rockaway). Children ages 5 and older can paint a Lisa Frank-style peace symbol from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. There's a second event to paint a Yin Yang landscape from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Price: $20 per class; keytomyart.com.

School's Out Skating events at United Skates of America (1276 Hicksville Rd., Seaford). From 6-9 p.m. on Jan. 20, check out an all you can eat pizza party, which includes skate rental, unlimited pizza and soda ($14). Model Train event at TMB Model Train Club Open House (120 Schmitt Blvd., Farmingdale). On Saturday, Jan. 19 and Sunday, Jan. 20 from 11 a.m.-4 p.m., families can check out a 4,000-square-foot model railroad layout, 10 trains, an operational logging line and a train layout that was featured in an episode of "The Sopranos."
