Islanders star John Tavares: Fashion is 'pretty cool'

Hockey isn’t the only game in town for Islanders star center John Tavares, 20, who, along with his team will hit the ice Saturday, Oct. 8, at Nassau Coliseum for the season opener against the Dallas Stars.
He’s into the fashion game, too. His small, newish “JT91” collection of trucker hats, T-shirts and hoodies by CCM-Reebok is, he says, “catching on a little bit.” Subtle and not overly designed graphics call out his initials and number and feature wavy lines, and Goth-meets-graffiti lettering.
“I’m excited about it,” Tavares says. “It’s pretty cool.” Tavares says he learned a lot about the fashion biz from the folks at CCM-Reebok. "It was new to me, the way it works, the way it looks, the way it's made, and they went through my closet and got a sense of how I want to dress.”
Though the JT91 line is very basic and casual, Tavares, like most pro athletes, does spruce up. “I like the Hugo Boss collared shirts and suits, and I have a few Armani shirts.” His biggest influence when it comes to wearing the good stuff? “I like to wear my mom’s favorite. She loves the Burberry line so I have a couple of sweaters.” N-ice.
Tavares says he hopes to have a second line of training and workout clothes by next summer. In the meantime, the 11-piece JT91 collection runs from $30 for an adjustable trucker hat to $75 for a digital print hoodie.
