The dog days of summer may be coming to an end, but pups will get their day to play at DogFest, a free event at Marjorie Post Park in Massapequa Park on Sept. 24.

Guests can bring their pooches — both pet and service dogs alike — for a fun-filled day of live music, dog costume contests, group walks, a parade, service dog demonstrations and activities including an agility course and apple bobbing for dogs. All are welcome to join the event even if they don't have a furry friend to tag along with. There will also be face painting, appearances by princess characters and balloon art for kids.

The nonprofit organization Canine Companions brings the festival to Long Island to help fund its mission of providing service dogs for people with special needs, including adults, children and veterans. Last year's event drew about 400 people, Northeast region executive director Debra Dougherty says.

In addition, September is National Service Dog Month, and attendees are encouraged to meet and greet service dogs in training at the event (be sure to ask handlers for the OK before petting them).

Dougherty notes that dogs who attend the fest can also benefit from socialization, as some dog owners may solely use their private yards to exercise their pets.

To maintain safety, all dogs in attendance must be up to date on vaccinations, kept on a leash no longer than six feet at all times and be at least six months old.
