Ben's Deli: Chicken soup cure
A few days ago, I was down with the sniffles, unable to taste food. An occupational problem.
Finding myself in the neighborhood of Ben’s Kosher Delicatessen in Woodbury, I went in and ordered up a bowl of matzo ball soup. Not that I had much hope it would help. Ben’s matzo ball soup, in the past, has been notoriously bland. (The chicken soup seems to vary greatly from one branch of Ben's to the next.)
This time, though, it was different. One sip and I was tasting dill. And chicken. True, the fluffy light matzo balls could have done with some salt, but by the time I’d finished the contents of the bowl, I could breathe and, more importantly, taste.
I celebrated with a hot dog with mustard on a toasted bun and a flaky, onion-y potato knish.
