What luck, to stumble upon Caldas, a Portuguese restaurant and bar that opened two weeks ago in New Hyde Park.

Service could not have been more hospitable. An appetizer of flaming chourico (chorizo) got dinner off to a roaring start. Highlights include a delicious arroz de marisco, the Portuguese version of seafood paella, made with crab legs, shrimp and clams. A whole roasted striped bass was not only delicious but a steal, at $15. Dinner concluded with a baked pear, a dessert I’d like to see at more restaurants.

Caldas is at 2224 Jericho Tpke., New Hyde Park, 516-216-5665
