Chef Meredith Machemer has left Bayport's Grey Horse Tavern, a farm-to-table restaurant where she recently garnered praise from Newsday for such dishes as roasted chicken breast and bucatini with kale, pumpkin and burrata cheese.

“I loved it there," Machemer said, “but I’m looking to slow down my life; my husband and I want to start a family.”

So Machemer has joined longtime friend and former colleague Steven Cardello, chef co-owner of Relish in Kings Park, who is on the verge of opening Reel Kitchen, a seafood market and takeout spot a block from Relish. Machemer, one of the few female executive chefs on Long Island, said that working at Reel Kitchen should be a lot easier than working at a restaurant, which demands long hours.

Meanwhile, Grey Horse Tavern co-owner Linda Ringhouse said that a new executive chef will be named shortly. Currently, sous chef Marissa Spinelli is in charge of the kitchen and just launched the restaurant’s new spring menu.

Watch for updates, both on Grey Horse Tavern and Reel Kitchen.

Grey Horse Tavern is at 291 Bayport Ave., Bayport, 631-472-1868.
