So sad to report the recent closing of Shang Hai Pavilion in Port Washington. With the disappearance of this regional Chinese restaurant, Long Island has just about run out of juice — that is, Shanghai-style juicy dumplings.

Also known as soup dumplings, these addictive little bundles (to be bitten gently, then sipped) take great skill to make and are almost impossible to come by east of the New York City border. True, a few restaurants get them from outside sources, but they're simply not the same as the ones made in-house.

A second branch of the restaurant — Shang Hai Pavilion II in Bellmore — closed last year.

Word has it that the Port Washington space will soon be occupied by a Japanese restaurant. Just what the area needs — more sushi.
