The Stone Turtle in Island Park is out of the race, closing a little more than a year after its debut.

The eclectic eatery garnered a single star from Newsday critic Peter Gianotti, who described it as “chef Gregory Baumel’s stylish spin on the gastro-pub theme.” Dishes that elicited praise: a “standout” buttery-crusted turkey potpie, a “juicy and tangy” pulled-pork sandwich and a lobster-and-white Cheddar quesadilla.

The restaurant was housed in a cavernous (perhaps too large) building that’s hosted a string of failed eateries: Overtime Grill & Ale House, Island Smokehouse and Freedom BBQ, to name a few.

Which raises the inevitable question: Is the site jinxed? One can only hope the next occupant will disprove that theory.
