Don't get caught in the holiday shopping rush tonight; get cultured.

Check out reversed black-and-white images in a photography presentation by Barbara Jaffe, a fine art photographer and head of the photography program in the Fine Arts/Art History department at Hofstra University.

The free presentation, organized by the Long Island Center of Photography, will be held at 7 p.m. in Manhasset Public Library's community room on the lower level.

Jaffe will discuss the inspiration for her work and her photographs, which are negative prints. She describes the negative print effect as revealing a "duplicate, but opposite world ... that is self-luminous, radiating rather than reflecting light."

"This special light describes a space that is strikingly real and yet metaphysical in nature," she says. "Therefore, it allows me to explore other issues of concern, the heart of which is the dual nature of reality."

Her work is in the collections of various museums across the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Brooklyn Museum and Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris.
