For fans of classic rock, the next two days will provide not one but two performances by dedicated, experienced cover acts – and not only are the shows a day apart, they are but a mere LIRR stop away from each other – and this pattern will be holding true until 2013.

On Friday, Oct. 12, big fans of the “Piano Man” can catch Mike DelGuidice and his band Big Shot at Mulcahy’s in Wantagh (3232 Railroad Ave., Wantagh, 516-783-7500, starting at 9 p.m. As Billy Joel gets older, finding him live in concert has become a rarity – but with this event DelGuidice and his crew will begin a series of exclusive appearances at this tremendous sports bar, music venue and dance space (regulars call it “Mulks” for short) as Mulcahy’s has become the only spot Big Shot will be playing in Nassau County over the next three months.

Big Shot does play music from other artists (Elton John, Chicago, The Beatles, Journey, among others), but their rendition of Billy Joel’s music is considered uncanny, and draws large crowds. However, even in the case of a sell out, most people should eventually get a chance to see their show, as every second Friday of the month (thru December), the band will appear, preceded by a 5-hour happy hour and followed by a DJ spinning dance beats. Age of admission is 21; expect a possible cover charge (in the neighborhood of $10). However, no need to worry about parking, as Mulcahy’s is only footsteps from the Wantagh LIRR station.

Take the LIRR one stop west from Wantagh, and the next stop is Bellmore, the community where KJ Farrell's is located (242 Pettit Ave., 516-804-9925, And just like Mulcahy’s, Farrell’s is barely more than a minute’s walk from the town train stop. But while Billy Joel’s music gets dedication at the aforementioned club down the road, this establishment will be welcoming FM, a cover band committed to properly producing the signature sound of Steely Dan.

Formerly known as “Stealin’ Dan,” FM is a 12-piece collaborative that recreates the catalog of music built by the duo Steely Dan (Donald Fagen and Walter Becker), an act inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame more than a decade ago. The original two do still tour -- but it’s been more than a year since they worked in the area, so for fans of the jazzy, funky rockers FM will be gunning to deliver a dead-on fix. They’re scheduled to be at KJ Farrell’s every second Thursday of the month (also through December) starting Oct. 11 at 7:30 p.m., to be followed by live band karaoke after 9:30 p.m. Attendees must be 21 years of age and over. Call ahead to find out if there will be an entrance fee.
