Dance and swing with Big Bad Voodoo Daddy

It might not be as trendy as it was before Y2K, but modern swing is still a big thing for some people.

Inspired by the Big Band orchestra sound that served as major dance music for guys and gals during the 1930s and 1940s, swing music made a comeback during the 1990s — as artists such as Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Squirrel Nut Zippers and Massapequa-born Brian Setzer put out modern tunes inspired by the efforts of such WWII-era iconic bandleaders as Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller and Cab Calloway.

Those aforementioned ‘90s artists found commercial success with contemporary swing, especially Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, as the Southern California-based group — while never becoming a frequently pop record-charting act — found regular airplay on modern rock radio and MTV, appeared in a successful film (“Swingers,” 1996) and even played the Super Bowl XXXIII halftime show.

Today, the fervor for swing may not be as barefaced, but it still has a fan base — and for those who enjoy learning the style and moves associated with the genre, The Paramount in Huntington has a show going on Saturday, Jan. 18 that might fit the bill — and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy will be a part of it.

The Daddies will be performing at that show — but before they take the stage, the not-for-profit organization, Swing Dance Long Island (SDLI), will be in-house to provide dance lessons, and then host a contest to allow those in the crowd who know their Lindy Hop from their Balboa (both big-time swing steps) to strut their stuff.
