Dress up for 'Diamonds & Snow'

When looking at today’s casual nightlife fashion, it may seem strange to think that formal attire was once not just preferred, but required.

In 2014, a man doesn't need much more than a collared shirt to gain entry to most venues — and women can often get away with street clothes — but back when long-defunct Manhattan destinations like Toots Shor’s, El Morocco and the Stork Club set the tone for nightlife in the USA, both guys and gals had to wear high-class clothes to cut a doorman’s mustard (much like what people wear to weddings today).

Of course, those aforementioned, legendary establishments saw their heyday before Kennedy was president, so it’s unlikely that most modern party people can relate to those times— but if you have an affinity for nightlife that necessitates that level of debonair dresswear, be sure and consider the bash set to take place at Thatched Cottage on Sunday, Jan. 26.

Starting at 6 p.m., the “Diamonds & Snow” affair will be taking over the lavish event space to provide an opportunity for aficionados of the ballroom era to step out in style, as cocktail attire is a must. Tickets are $70 in advance ($80 at the door), and include four hours of free wine, beer, soft drinks and hors d’oeuvres — as well as a fashion show (from Francine’s Fashion Boutique of Huntington), entertainment (from ballroom dance duo Oleg and Lena Skrypnyk) and dancing, with live music led by vocalist Tito Barista. In addition, there will be a silent auction; the proceeds from which will benefit the Vanderbilt Museum and Planetarium.
