After Secretariat, Monarchos and Northern Dancer, the fastest mover at the Kentucky Derby is the mint julep.

The drink came to Churchill Downs in 1938. Expect upwards of 80,000 to be made there for this year's run. But the origins of it are, of course, unclear.

The results: always rosy.

Here's a recipe for a mint julep from "Mr. Boston: Platinum Edition."

Ingredients:

4 sprigs mint

1 teaspoon superfine sugar (or simple syrup)

2 teaspoons water

2 1/2 ounces bourbon

In a silver julep cup, silver mug or collins glass, muddle mint leaves, sugar or syrup, and water. Fill glass or mug with shaved or crushed ice and add bourbon. Top with more ice and garnish with a mint spring and straws.
