Upon hearing that a "Blood Moon" is imminent, some people might be put a bit on edge by its somewhat ominous name — and if those same folks are also avid Web users, possibly more than just a “bit” — as the use of the key words “blood” and “moon” together in an online search will turn up links to blogs and articles that connect this sort of celestial occurrence to prophesies and cataclysms.

However, from a scientific standpoint, the slightly gory moniker simply refers to the reddish hue taken on by the moon during a lunar eclipse. The next such event is expected to take place just before sunrise on Wednesday, Oct. 8 — and while it is potentially a visual dazzler in the making, the time of day at which it’s happening makes arranging a simultaneous party understandably unlikely. On the other hand, for those who don't mind an inspired celebration a few days from the actual date, Gurney's Montauk Resort & Seawater Spa will be throwing a “Blood Moon Party” on Saturday, Oct. 11, to belatedly mark the cosmic occasion.

Starting at 8 p.m., those in attendance will receive complimentary beer and wine throughout the duration of the gathering, along with entertainment by Gurney’s resident mixer DJ Sven. In addition, party guests will be permitted to swim in Gurney’s heated and filtered seawater pool, which draws its H2O directly from the ocean outside.

Admission is $25; 21 and over only. For more information, call Gurney’s at 631-668-2345.

*Gurney’s Montauk Resort & Seawater Spa is located at 290 Old Montauk Hwy. in Montauk.
