Tanner Park at sunset. Alternative rock band The Psychedelic Furs will play a free show at the park on Friday, Aug. 5, 2011 at 7:30 p.m.

Among fans of rock, alternative rock and new wave, The Psychedelic Furs are a very, very big deal – so big, in fact, the band is a headliner at this weekend’s Escape To New York music festival being held at the Shinnecock Reservation in Southampton (along with Patti Smith and of Montreal). Although scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 6, at that event, fans can pass on a journey to the Hamptons -- and on paying $100 for a ticket – as the Furs will also be on Long Island on Friday, Aug. 5, to play a free show at Tanner Park in Copiague.

Taking the stage at 7:30 p.m., The Psychedelic Furs bring an arsenal of hit songs, including “The Ghost in You” and “Heartbreak Beat” -- both scoring heavy rotation on MTV in the '80s, and also breaking into the Billboard Hot 100 charts. However, they are also known quite well for their track “Pretty in Pink,” which not only happened to inspire Hollywood director John Hughes to include the tune on a soundtrack for one of his seminal films, but to also give the movie (starring Molly Ringwald and Jon Cryer) the same title.

Furthermore, once the show has wrapped, the Resurrection promotions group is throwing an after-party at Broadway Bar in Amityville. Doors open at 10 p.m. for $7 ($5 with an event flyer) with DJs Alleycat, Krztoff, BoogiePop and Shellshock playing new wave, industrial, garage rock and other hard-edge dance beats until close.
