It was the very end of 2010 when The Cortland in Bay Shore first arrived on the LI nightlife scene, offering events and parties not often found elsewhere on the Island.

Fast-forward to now and the pub is still going strong, with a number of those unique promotions and events (such as Rock-Paper-Scissors tournaments, film screenings and art showings) transforming from novel get-togethers into anticipated happenings. But among its regular weekly and monthly gatherings, it also hosts an annual affair that has become a Cortland institution – and this year it lands on Friday, Dec. 20 at 8 p.m.: Winterfest.

Returning for a third time, it’s the brainchild of beer-minded podcasters Travis Johnides and Michael Howland (aka “The Beer Amigos”). Winterfest is always an event that offers unusual brews and the 2013 edition will be no different, with a Russian Imperial Stout (brewed with chipotle, cinnamon, and cocoa) created by Holbrook’s Spider Bite Brewing Co. to be served, along with the Long Ireland Beer Company’s Winter Ale (with candy canes and cinnamon sticks added for the occasion).

In addition, the evening will also feature an Ugly Holiday Sweater contest, raffles and a faux-snow machine – and furthermore, attendees that donate to Toys for Tots during the fest will receive a $10 in-house gift certificate.
