Two chances to hear alternative (and mostly local) music

Already a leading local outlet for alternative music, Stony Brook University's noncommercial radio station 90.1 WUSB-FM has a duo of days on the way that involve the college’s channel breaking from its regular format to provide an even heavier-than-usual rotation of indie music — with many of the bands to be featured hailing directly from Long Island.

The first irregular incidence of indie will take place on Thursday, Nov. 21 in the form of a station fundraiser and live broadcast. Starting at 8 p.m. at the school’s University Cafe (in the Stony Brook Union Building), the event will offer a selection of vinyl records and CDs for sale, while also presenting performances from Queens-based band The Beets and New Jersey act Liquor Store. Age of admission is 21 and over with guests asked to pay a $5 suggested donation to enter (there will be door prizes).

However, WUSB will also be spending much of this upcoming Saturday (Nov. 23) hosting a “Music Marathon” on its airwaves from 11 a.m.-12 a.m. During this special program, the following 12 LI bands will be playing live from Room 237 of the Student Union:
