Hot Diggity Dogs replaces First National Franks in Medford

Hot Diggity Dogs takes over the former home of First National Franks, a Medford stop for frankfurters plain and fancy. A supersized wiener sculpture still serves as a rooftop beacon.
New owner Elliot Anderson said he’s kept much of the original menu but has switched some buns to make them proportionate to the franks they’re holding. The smallest 1/8 pound hot dog, for example, now comes on a New England style bun rather than a Martin’s potato roll, which Anderson termed “overwhelming.“ But that roll, he went on to say, works well with the larger 1/6 pound hot dog, which “can handle” it. A soft hoagie rather than a hard kaiser roll cradles the jumbo half pound hot dog.
The eatery continues to feature hand-cut fries. They’re cooked to order and made with the potato Anderson says has the best consistency — the Burbank.
On the menu: A “New Yorker” dog topped with mustard and sauerkraut ($2.75 regular, $3.25 medium, $3.75 jumbo) and a ”Chicago” dog topped with onions, relish, tomato, yellow mustard, jalapeños and pickle ($3.50 regular, $4 medium, $4.50 jumbo). Anderson touts his Long Island cheese steak sandwich ($9.95), saying “Philly isn’t the only act in town.“ This version, he said, is made with a half pound of prime rib-eye and a combination of American, provolone and Swiss cheeses.
