Jason Day among pro golfers dining at Blackstone Steakhouse in Melville

No doubt there are stretching exercises and meditations that help the pro golfer get ready for a big tournament. Apparently, there’s also a big, juicy steak.

Blackstone Steakhouse in Melville has been serving the world’s best golfers in the run-up to The Barclays at Bethpage Black, which got under way Thursday at Bethpage State Park in Farmingdale.

Jason Day, the No. 1-ranked player in the world, dined at Blackstone’s on Tuesday evening. According to general manager Dodo Tecusan, he sat in a booth with two other people; the party ordered two steaks and a fish dish. Also in the house that night: John Huh, Graeme McDowell, Charley Hoffman, Danny Lee and K.J. Choi. Rory McIlroy, a former No. 1, dined with sports writer and commentator John Feinstein, author of the golf classic “A Good Walk Spoiled” (Little Brown & Co, 1995).

Last night, Tecusan said, Vijay Singh was the only big name in the house.

Blackstone Steakhouse, one of the Anthony Scotto restaurant group, opened in 2005. Tecusan said that it established itself as a player favorite in 2009 when the U.S. Open was held at Bethpage Black. “Then four years ago,” he said, “the Barclays was at Bethpage and they all knew to come here for dinner.”

He noted that Blackstone’s is the high-end steakhouse closest to the tournament, and that many of the competitors are staying at the Melville Marriot, less than a mile away.
