Pine Grove Inn
The Pine Grove inn dates to 1910. It is, of course, a very old-fashioned place, and one of the few restaurants left on Long Island where you can have a German meal. Service is friendly, and the site on the Swan River has its virtues. If you have a sturdy appetite, consider an opened of grilled kielbasa with wine-braised sauerkraut, herring with sour cream of potato pancakes with apple sauce. They also offer shrimp cocktail, stuffed clams, fried calamari, steamed mussels and littlenecks and blue points on the half-shell - a list of Long Island staples, for sure. The adventurous can veer toward "escargots prepared in the classic manner." Wiener rostbraten, a sauteed rib-eye steak with crisp onions; a Bavarian platter of wursts and smoked pork chop; beef Stroganoff; and sauerbraten with red cabbage point you in the right direction. Dissenters can opt for chicken Cordon Bleu, shrimp scampi-style and penne alla vodka. At lunch: Buffalo-style chicken wings, burgers, chicken tenders, a prime rib sandwich au jus with horseradish sauce.
