Is your morning bagel, toast or muffin no longer agreeing with you? You're not alone. Research at the University of Maryland School of Medicine found that the rate of celiac disease is increasing among older adults. The results surprised researchers, because previous studies indicated the digestive disorder typically begins in childhood.

Symptoms of celiac disease -- diarrhea, bloating and stomach cramps -- are triggered by eating foods with gluten, a protein in wheat, rye and barley. Fortunately, there are wheat-free foods available, including products made with corn, rice and flax. (Make sure the words "gluten free" are on the product container.)

Keep in mind that unless you have sensitivity to gluten, the FDA says there are no nutritional advantages to being on a gluten-free diet.
