Age-related macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness in people 65 and older. But several studies have shown that eating certain foods may help prevent or delay the disease's progression. The Foundation of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, through its EyeCare America program, is offering "Feast Your Eyes on This," a 27-page booklet with recipes and advice on how eating healthy can combat macular degeneration

Among the beneficial foods are citrus fruits and dark-green leafy vegetables such as broccoli and spinach. Foods high in zinc (whole grains, beef and pork) and omega-3 fatty acids (nuts, fish and many vegetable oils) also are recommended and are integral parts of the recipes in the booklet.
