It’s not uncommon for dog lovers to claim their pup is the best and from Boxers to Yorkshire terriers, each breed is unique in its own way. But which breed shines above them all? Newsday asked Google for the top 10 dog breed searches from Nassau and Suffolk to find out which dog is a Long Islander’s best friend.

10. Boxer

This Working Group dog is known for its high energy and muscular build. They originated in Germany and bred from the Old English bulldog and the now-extinct Bullenbeisser.

9. French bulldog

Surprisingly, the French bulldog actually originated in England and were used during the Industrial Revolution in lace factories as companions to workers. They were later sent to France and given the name Boule-Dog Francais. This breed is recognized by two distinctive features: its bat ears and half-flat, half-domed skull.

One of the most popular family pets, the Golden retriever is lovable and known to be well-behaved. Goldens were the first AKC Obedience Trial champion.

If you're looking for a hypoallergenic dog for your family the Yorkshire Terrier may be the answer because of their human-like hair. Their origin is traced back to England, where they were used to chase away rodents in factories.

Ancestors of the French bulldog, the bulldog originated in the British Isles and received its name from their involvement in the sport of bull baiting during the 18th century.

In ancient China, these dogs were specifically bred to create the wrinkles and patterns on their faces to form Chinese symbols that represented luck. Years of selective breeding has resulted in their distinctive flat faces, which some may find cute, but actually indicates a severe anatomical deformity characteristic of brachycephalic syndrome.

German shepherds were originally used to help herd and guard sheep but are now commonly used in the police force and other law enforcement areas. They are known for their loyalty, courage and protective nature.

A mix between the Newfoundland and the labrador, the breed is a native of Newfoundland. Centuries ago this particular breed helped fishermen retrieve fish and nets and were named after the sea they worked in, the Labrador Sea.

Referred to as America's dog, this breed has been a stable throughout popular culture. Famous American pit bull terriers include Petey in "The Little Rascals" and the RCA dog, to name a few. This breed developed in the 19th century in England, Scotland and Ireland, and is a mix between a bulldog and a terrier. The breed has a mixed reputation and is banned from certain states, countries and airlines due to their sometimes aggressive behavior. Many believe their temperament is set during their upbringing; if an owner trains the dog properly, it will be loving, compassionate and loyal.

Siberian Huskies are beloved by many animal enthusiasts but hold a special place in Alaska. Known as the the Great Race of Mercy, in 1925 a group of Siberian Huskies delivered diphtheria medication to Nome, an Alaskan town experiencing a incipient epidemic. One hero dog in particular, Balto, has a memorial statue in Central Park.
