Apps to kick off your NFL enjoyment
On this first Sunday of the NFL season, the Giants are expected to begin their quest for a playoff spot while the Jets, unfortunately, are expected to do no better than compete for next season’s No. 1 draft choice.
Whether you root for the Giants, Jets or another NFL team, these apps can keep you informed and entertained all the way until Super Bowl LII.
New York Giants Mobile

For fans of the home teams, these separate apps bring a wealth of information to game day. Both are updated for the 2017 season and feature stats, news, depth charts and exclusive videos. Best features for both are pregame coverage and live video feeds of postgame news conferences.
TuneIn Radio Premium

If you’re a fan of the Jets or Giants, you don’t have to worry about seeing every game on TV or hearing the play-by-play on the radio. But if you’re a fan of any other NFL team, you may often be in the dark. TuneIn Radio Premium gives you access to live game radio broadcasts of all 32 NFL teams. A TuneIn Radio Premium subscription also includes access to live game radio broadcasts from all NBA and Major League Baseball teams.

Among the enjoyable things on an NFL Sunday is keeping track of scores and, for fantasy football players, who’s doing the scoring. While many people use ESPN (iOS, Android; free) as their go-to sports news and scoreboard app, theScore has a large fan base that loves its feisty coverage and clean, no-nonsense interface.
Madden NFL Mobile 18
(iOS, Android; free)
If the real games become too depressing, there’s always Madden. Overhauled for the 2017 season, the wildly popular game features unparalleled graphics and has added a “story mode” that will be updated monthly. Unlike Madden 18 for PlayStation and Xbox, the mobile version is free – but gameplay can be limited and frustrating. In-app purchases (as high as $99) put the mobile version on a level playing field with the console versions.
Parking options
Thinking about driving to Manhattan for shopping, going to a museum or seeing a show? As every Long Islander knows, finding parking in New York City is not easy. Google has added a feature to Google Maps in which after you set a destination, you can call up a list of lots and garages. The feature is only on Android, but it is expected to be added to iPhones soon. — PETER KING
Urge to splurge
Retailers are focusing on their mobile sites, and with good reason. A University of British Columbia study found shoppers were more likely to buy extravagant items when using a mobile device compared with using a desktop computer. Researchers said the “playful and fun nature” of a touch screen breaks down inhibitions about buying “hedonic products.” — PETER KING
Walmart vs. Amazon: Sky’s the limit
Opening up a new front in its battle against Amazon, Walmart has applied for a patent for a floating warehouse that would bring products from the aircraft down to shoppers’ homes via drones. The blimp-style craft would fly at heights between 500 feet and 1,000 feet. Amazon was granted a patent for a similar vessel in last year. — Bloomberg News
